NEW! SECOND EDITION!
THE WRITER'S JOURNEY has now been re-issued with a greatly expanded second edition. It includes a new introduction, responding to the varied
reactions I encountered in the places I've traveled, and in-depth analysis of some new films; Titanic, Pulp Fiction, The Full
Monty, the Star Wars saga and The Lion King. I was involved in the development of The Lion King and I talk about actually applying my theories to a major work.
Available through Michael Wiese Productions.

THE WRITER'S JOURNEY: Mythic Structure for Writers (Michael Wiese Productions) is a guidebook for
writers to the ancient path of the storytellers through the mysterious country of myth. It was inspired by the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell
and by my life-long fascination with myths and their subtle but deep influence on modern storytelling, especially for the screen.
The book offers a 12-stage model of the classic Hero's Journey, derived from Campbell's
observations of the patterns of myth and folklore. This, it turns out, is a very useful emotional outline for almost any story, describing the
inevitable stages that we all must pass through to make a significant change in our lives.
The book also presents some of the major "archetypes" of character, recurring patterns such as the Hero, Mentor, Trickster, Shadow, Herald, Ally,
and Shapeshifter. These are not simplistic stereotypes, but complex collections of ideas and observations about fundamental human qualities.
The book has made its impact on world cinema, being translated into French, German, Italian, Portuguese
and even Icelandic.
